WTH? Are you serious?

What?, originally uploaded by mjd-s.
Most annoying or ridiculous advice in regards to pregnancy, birthing or babies in general that you’ve been given?

Sleep when the baby sleeps
I find this so so so irritating. Like it would never occur to someone to do that considering you have to be awake when the baby is awake? Also it doesn’t work when you have a non-sleeping type of baby - it just infuriates.
Give newborns warm boiled water.
This is such a total no-no, but 25 years ago it was a done thing. The advice came from my MIL - and what was so annoying was that it stuck in Yoshi’s head until I actually got a booklet out and pointed to where it said that was a very bad idea.
It was also really hard to deal with when I was having so much trouble trying to breast feed - and get decent advice and information.
Don’t let go of EM for a minute when you are outside - someone will try to kidnap him.
MIL again. I didn’t think she was serious but she says this a lot. Somehow she is convinced he will be stolen.
I’m pretty sure they’d give him back after just one night if he was though…..
To meet other mothers go to a local park every day for a few hours until someone talks to you.
MIL again - when I’d asked if she’d heard about any groups or classes or places I could find out more information. This was right after discussing how time poor I was trying to balance out baby, work, house.. and well everything. And it ignored just the whole drama involved with being a foreigner - in 9 months of going to the clinic no one spoke to me why would they suddenly do so at a park?

*hugs* Wow, you got inundated.
I don’t know what it is, I don’t think that I have a particularly intimidating personality, but I have had very little advice. And only ever by strangers. My friends and family must know that I would ignore anything Steve and I didn’t agree with anyway.
But the strangers. Well, two incidences stand out.
1. I was about 6 months pregnant and picked up a coffee at starbucks. A stranger came up and tried to take it out of my hand, because didn’t I know I shouldn’t drink coffee when I was pregnant? That woman was lucky I was too shocked to react, because throwing coffee over her would have been money well spent.
2. Eating lunch at work in our lunchroom. A technician sees me drinking a soda (diet coke, I believe) and starts ranting at me at how I am killing my baby. I never did figure out whether she objected to the caffeine or the aspartame because I just walked out on her. -
Your MIL would not be crazy with the kidnapping thing if you were in China. In China they do have a problem with kidnapping of babies due to the 1-child-policy restriction.

But you’re in Japan, where it is crazy to worry about baby kidnapping.

Yikes Gen those stories are so sad. Those poor parents.
gaspode - I have heard that in countries like the US and Australia some people take it upon themselves to put their views of what you should be doing while pregnant right in your face. They have no right to do so. The best plan while pregnant is all things in moderation - I drank coffee and wine during mine and my kid turned out fine. The stress of NEVER having a few things you like is worse than a bit of caffeine or alcohol.

Oh me too (with a bit of alcohol and caffeine). Plus, we hang out in bars a lot and that would have been depressing, not seeing our bartender friends.
